About the OECA (Ottawa East
Community Association)
|
Old Ottawa East
The community of Old
Ottawa East is located on either side of Main Street, east of
the Canal, west of the Rideau River, south of Sandy Hill and north
of Old Ottawa South. It encompasses the area that was once the
Village of Ottawa East. Main St. was the main street of the village
and the name remained after it was annexed to the City of Ottawa
because Ottawa had no other Main Street in 1907.

Community
Association and Related Groups
The Ottawa East Community
Association is the volunteer run association representing the residents
of the area. Monthly meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the
month at 7:15 at the Old Town Hall. We typically do not hold meetings
in July and August.
The village's Old Town Hall
located at 61 Main St. now serves as the community centre.
Since the big amalgamation
of the City of Ottawa we also refer to ourselves as the Old Ottawa East
Community Association similar to what was done in Old Ottawa South.
We have been adding the prefix of Old to our name on a working basis.
Throughout this website the terms Ottawa East and Old Ottawa East mean
the same thing.
The community association
concerns itself primarily with traffic, local development, neighbourhood
safety, heritage and social issues. Along with other community associations
we are part of the City Centre Coalition, Citizens for Healthy Communities,
the Coalition Against Queensway Widening as well as the Federation of
Community Associations. The Ottawa East Community Association board
is made up of:
President Nick
Masciantonio
Vice-president Jenn
Drew
Secretary Ruth MacKenzie
Treasurer Don Fugler
Membership chair Barbara Hicks
Past president Jan
D'Arcy
CAG rep Catherine Pacella
Planning Committee Paul Goodkey (Chair)
Sustainable Living Ottawa East (SLOE) rep rotating rep
Lees Ave. Apts. rep Bill
Baldwin
Federation of Community Associations (FCA) rep Christian
Pupp
City Centre Coalition (CCC) rep John Baglow
Standing Committee on Traffic and Transportation Suzanne
Johnston
Standing Committee on Communications Lisa Rickenbacher (Chair)
Business rep Mika Weaver
Member at large John Dance
Member at large Linda Krystal |
The Community
Activities Group (CAG) is the other community organization operating
from the Old Town Hall and they are mainly concerned with recreational,
educational and social programs run in the neighbourhood (at the Old
Town Hall, from the school facilities and parks).
The community newspaper is
called The Mainstreeter. It is published
once every two months (except for July and August) and distributed throughout
Old Ottawa East.
The mailing address for the
OECA (also known as OOECA), for CAG and The
Mainstreeter is:

Main
Street Visioning and Revitalization
Saturday November 19th 2005
there was an Open House on Main Street redevelopment ideas at Saint
Paul University. Get more info and background
on the project.
You can download
a PDF of the survey from the committee working on a vision for Main
Street. Completed surveys can be sent to the Old Town Hall address
above.
Traffic
Aside from fighting highway
expansions which would harm Ottawa East such as the Alta Vista Corridor
and Queensway widening, the community association worked with the city
in 2000 to develop a neighbourhood plan to calm traffic, to make the
neighbourhood safer and more livable. The text from the 2000
Main Street Transportation and Streetscaping Report can be downloaded
here (370K in pdf format). We continue to work to see its recommendations
implemented.
Heritage
and History
Curious about the history
of the village? The Community Association has copies of A History
of Ottawa East CDROM available (written in part and compiled
by Rick Wallace). It includes about 500 photographs and 300 pages of
text about the development of this community. Copies are avaliable for
$5 at the Old Town Hall, 61 Main Street.
Neighbourhood
Inventory
In the
fall of 2004 we, along with help from Councillor Doucet's office, have
begun compiling a neighbourhood inventory
of things in need fixing or things to keep an eye on in the neighbourhood.
If you have suggestions of items for the list please e-mail us at oeca@magma.ca
.
