Sustainable Living Ottawa
East (SLOE) is a committee of the Ottawa East Community Association.
It was established in December 2006.
We conduct projects that help people
who live, work and study in Old Ottawa East to take concrete, practical
steps to live more sustainably (reduce environmental pressures). We
also try to ensure that our projects promote the health of the local
economy and the well-being of residents.
|
More specifically,
our projects aim to:
- Expand the market share
of sustainably-produced food (locally-grown, organic, fairly traded)
in Old Ottawa East (OOE)
- Increase food-growing in
OOE
- Reduce consumption of non-renewable,
GHG-emitting energy in OOE
- Increase transportation
alternatives (e.g., pedestrian, cycling), including recreational options
- Minimize car use
- Enhance the ecological health
of existing public, institutional & residential green space in OOE
- Promote and create green
spaces that OOE residents will enjoy
SLOE has developed or is developing
great working relationships with many partners, including Sandy Hill Community
Health Centre, Saint Paul University, Just Food, the Ottawa East Community
Activities Group, the Ottawa Chapter of Canadian Organic Growers, and
Carleton and Ottawa Universities. We have a number of projects already
in place or well advanced in their development including: a farmers market,
a community garden, a children's garden, a plan for enhancing the
ecological conditions and community appeal of the Rideau River shoreline,
and improvements to pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. SLOE is also
exploring opportunities related to renewable and community energy options,
fair trade designation for our community, and sustainable commuting options.
And we are participating in the work to develop the Ottawa East Community
Design Plan.
