About the Coalition: Smog Breakfast

Smart Growth or Smog Growth? We want a choice.

On June 18th a Smog Breakfast was held on the Lees Avenue overpass to the Queensway. Coffee and croissant were served cafe style. The event was sponsored by the Sierra Club as well as community groups such as the Coalition for Against Queensway Expansion. The purpose of the event was to highlight the harmful aspects of Queensway widening in the downtown and to raise awareness about the Ontario Minister of Transportation's proposed Bill 25. Bill 25 would enable transportation corridors to be designated with less influence from environmental assessments, less regard for cities' official plans and more under the control of the Minister of Transport. Bill 25 would enable a project like the Queensway widening to be done more unilaterally.

The breakfast was about wanting choice. By spending more on roads and not on transit the province would reduce the choices the City of Ottawa could make towards Smart Growth. Without adequate rapid transit in all neighbourhoods, people will not be able to choose cleaner and more efficient ways of getting to work. In effect, all of Ottawa would lack any choice with respect to congestion and smog.
