Day and Session Agenda

  1. 90 minutes per session:
    • One of 2 Events-Stay Longer and Chat.
  2. 30 minutes to show you some visions;
  3. 60 minutes to look at the visions, maps and talk to Committee members;
  4. And … Please fill out the feedback forms.

Old Ottawa East: Open House Objectives

  • To inform residents about:
    • The long term visioning exercise-why-who-where?
    • Results to date.
  • To get your feedback on visions for Main St and surrounding area.
  • To get you involved as we move forward.

Who We Are

  • One of two committees established by Old Ottawa East Community Association to review development issues;
  • Holders of the mandate to develop long term vision for Main Street;
  • Sponsors of an initial workshop conducted in October;
  • Sponsors of an ongoing survey of the community.

Why We are Doing This

  • A critical mass of events happened to catalyze the Community Association and Concerned residents:
    • Recent Development Activities Along Main Street;
    • Transportation Battles.
  • Main Street provides links and focus for the Old Ottawa East neighbourhoods;
  • A healthy Main Street makes a desirable Old Ottawa East.

1. Ottawa East Defining Features

  • Respect-rebuild small village character:
    • Reinforce existing strong residential sectors;
    • Enhance existing commercial areas.
  • Enhance pedestrian character and access;
  • Building and strengthening paths and connections:
    • Lees Ave and Old Algonquin;
    • North of Queensway.
  • Build Gateways at entry points:
    • South at Riverdale;
    • North at Col. By Drive.

2. Revitalized and Enhanced Commercial Base Along Main St.

  • Developed mixed use commercial-residential along Main St.
  • Expanded commercial development along:
    • the Oblates land;
      • Maintain formal entry view to Oblates building;
    • frontage to Immaculata;
    • under the Queensway.
  • Encouraged a diverse range of commercial uses:
    • Eg., Coffee shop, bakery, post office and others

3. A Human Scale Maintained

  • 3-4 storeys along Main Street;
  • Appropriately scaled human centred environments:
    • Many doors and “eyes on the street”;
    • Places for small, local business.
  • Changed mobility to suit the community;
    • Facilitate “aging in place”;
    • Create residential support for Seniors on Main St.;
      • Health centres & recreational facilities

4. Protected Pedestrian and Cycle Paths

  • Easy to get to Main St.;
  • Improved connection for Lees Ave residents with Main St.;
    • Improved pedestrian character on Lees;
    • Bridge the gap between Lees Ave. towers and Main St.;
  • Maintained river walks and park connections;
  • Foot bridge from the Glebe.

 

5. Actively Involved and Partnered with Institutions

  • Saint Paul University, Immaculata, Lady Evelyn School and area churches are partners to achieve spiritual, physical and economic well-being:
    • Institutions become focal points for community events
    • Encourage community participation with Schools;
    • Reinforce Saint Paul University’s role as an international religious institution within the community;
    • Provide additional services for members of congregations from outside the immediate community;
    • Intensify underutilized land without compromising the intent of existing uses

6. Expanded Arts & Culture

  • Do a few things well:
    • Encourage the development of new Arts and Culture facilities for events, education;
    • Develop a new Recreation Centre, augmenting activities at Immaculata, Saint Paul and through OOECA Community Activities Group;
    • Increased support for activities at Old Town Hall.

7. Sustainable Community Created

  • Enhanced the existing wealth of natural spaces;
    • Increased access to the river;
    • Community gardens.
  • Healthy Live/Play/Work:
    • Health-promoting businesses.
  • A model sustainable community.
  • Sustainable and multi-modal transit.
  • Adaptive reuse of institutional properties and compatible infill.
